The Restoration of Station Hall

At Hewitt & Walker, we’re often drawn to projects that take time, the kind where stories unfold gradually and craftsmanship is revealed layer by layer. Our recent work with the National Railway Museum in York was exactly that.

Over the course of several months, we documented the extensive restoration of Station Hall, one of the museum’s most recognisable and historically significant spaces. The project required us to return regularly, capturing progress as it happened and building a visual record of a major moment in the museum’s ongoing story.

Our cameras captured the work of builders, architects, archivists and conservation specialists — each bringing their own expertise to the project. From structural work and intricate detailing to the careful handling of historic materials, the process was as compelling as the finished space itself.

Alongside the restoration documentary, we also filmed the official reopening of Station Hall, marked by a visit from Princess Anne. Together, the two films provide a complete narrative: from restoration and craftsmanship to public unveiling.
